als, I) Zeitpartikel: ubi (wo, als, bezeichnet den Punkt in der Zeit, von dem etwas anderes seinen Anfang nimmt). – ut (sowie, sobald als, einen Erfolg, nach dem sogleich ein anderer eingetreten ist). – cum (da, zu der Zeit, als, indem, ein Zusammentreffen zweier Fakten, so [81] daß diese entweder momentan in einen Zeitpunkt zusammenfallen, od. daß der eine mit »als« gegebene momentan in die Dauer des andern fällt od. diesem unmittelbar folgt). – Ost steht »als« im Deutschen im Nachsatze, wo man es im Latein. umkehren muß, indem cum da steht, wo man den Begriff der Zeit hervorheben will. Dies findet besonders statt, wenn nach als ein bereits, schon, kaum, noch nicht steht, z. B. als kaum ein Jahr verflossen war, klagte er ihn an, vix annus intercesserat, cum illum accusavit. – Sehr häufig wird aber die Zeitpartikel »als« auch durch ein Partizip ausgedrückt, und zwar steht es in demselben Kasus des Nomens, auf das es sich bezieht, wenn nur ein Subjekt im Satze ist, dagegen werden die Abll. absoluti angewendet, wenn zwei od. mehrere Subjekte im Satze sind, z. B. als Tarquinius Ardea belagerte, verlor er die Herrschaft, Tarquinius Ardeam oppugnans perdidit regnum: als Alexander in die Grenzen von Persien eindringen wollte, übergab er die Stadt Susa dem Archelaus, Alexander Persidis fines aditurus Susa urbem Archelao tradidit: als Dionysius aus Syrakus vertrieben war, unterrichtete er zu Korinth junge Leute, Dionysius Syracusis expulsus Corinthi pueros docebat: als Tarqunius Superbus regierte, kam Pythagoras nach Italien, Pythagoras Tarquinio Superbo regnante in Italiam venit: als Karthago zerstört war, verschlimmerten sich die Sitten der Römer, Carthagine dirutā Romanorum mores corrumpebantur. – Ebenso sind die Abll. absoluti häufig da anzuwenden, wo zwar im Deutschen beide Sätze nur ein Subjekt haben, aber die Handlung des einen als für sich bestehend betrachtet und das Subjekt bloß auf die des andern bezogen werden kann, z. B. als Cäsar die Winterquartiere bereist hatte, fand er die Kriegsschiffe völlig ausgerüstet, Caesar circuitis omnibus hibernis naves longas invenit instructas. – Die Verbindungen: eher als, solange als, sobald als suche unter »ehe, solange, sobald«.
II) als Vergleichungspartikel, 1) nach Komparativen und nach allen Verben, die den Begriff eines Komparativs enthalten (wie: ich will lieber, malo: es ist besser, praestat), heißt »als« quam. – Steht aber der zu vergleichende Gegenstand im Nomin. u. Akkus., wo man fragen kann, wer? und wen? so kann »als« auch im Lat. durch den bloßen Ablat. ausgedrückt werden, z. B. Tugend ist vorzüglicher als Gold, virtus est praestantior quam aurum od. praestantior auro. – Der bloße Ablat. steht jedoch nur dann, wenn jeder falschen Bezeichnung durch den ganzen Zusammenhang vorgebeugt ist, und zwar bes. in drei Fällen: α) in stehenden Formeln, z. B. das ist klarer als die Sonne, hoc est luce clarius; id quod est solis luce clarius. – β) bei der Negation, z. B. keiner ist dümmer als er, nemo est illostultior. – γ) in der negativen Frage, z. B. wer ist tapferer als er? quis est illo fortior? – Notwendig ist dagegen der Gebrauch des Ablativs, wenn der zur Vergleichung angewendete Gegenstand das Relativ qui, quae, quod ist, in welchem Falle der Komparativ mit einer [82] Negation od. einem Fragewort verbunden ist, z. B. Polybium sequamur, quo nemo fuit diligentior (denn niemand war sorgfältiger als dieser): u. cole amicitiam, quā quid potest esse dulcius? (denn was ist süßer als diese?). – Bei Zahlbestimmungen wird im Latein. nach den Komparativen amplius u. plus (mehr), minus (weniger), minor (jünger), maior (älter) häufig quam weggelassen und die Zahl dennoch in den Kasus gesetzt, der ohne den Komparativ erfordert würde, z. B. es sind mehr als sechs Monate, amplius sunt sex menses: er vermißte mehr als zweihundert Soldaten, plus ducentos milites desideravit: weniger als dreihundert kamen um, minus trecenti perierunt. – als daß, quam ut od. quam qui (quae, quod etc.) m. folg. Konjunktiv. Es steht dann im Vordersatze das Wörtchen zu mit einem Adjektiv, das im Lat. durch den Komparativ des Adjektivs ausgegedrückt wird, z. B. die Stadt war zu fest, als daß sie beim ersten Angriff hätte erobert werden können, urbs munitior erat, quam ut (quae) primo impetu capi posset. – Das Deutsche als in Gemäßheit (als nach) einer Sache zu erwarten ist, das oft nach einem Komparativ folgt, wird von Livius und Spätern bl. durch quam pro ausgedrückt, z. B. der Kampf war hartnäckiger, als man nach der Zahl der Kämpfenden erwartet hätte, proelium atrocius erat quam pro pugnantium numero.
2) nach negativen Sätzen u. Fragen (= außer), sowie nach Erklärungen u. Deutungen: praeter; praeterquam; nisi, z. B. ich glaube, dir fehlt nichts als der Wille, tibi nihil deesse arbitror praeter voluntatem: die Philosophen behaupten, niemand sei tugendhaft als der Weise, philosophi negant, quemquam esse bonum, nisi sapientem. – nichts anderes als, nihil aliud nisi (alles andere ausschließend); nihil aliud quam (vergleichend).
3) nach den Wörtern, die eine Gleichheit, Ähnlichkeit, Ungleichheit, Verschiedenheit ausdrücken (im Latein. aeque, idem, par, alius, aliter, secus, contra etc.), wird »als« gegeben durch atque od. ac (die völlige Gleichheit ausdrücken, wogegen quam steigert oder herabsetzt; weshalb auch, wenn vor aeque, alius eine Negation steht, quam folgen muß, da die Negation die völlige Gleichheit aufhebt). – Sollen aber dergleichen Vergleichungssätze in engerer Verbindung genommen werden, so wird, »als« gegeben durch et (und), ut (wie), nach idem (ebenso) durch qui, z. B. wir können keine Freundschaft halten, wenn wir unsere Freunde nicht ebenso als uns selbst lieben, amicitiam tueri non possumus, nisi aeque amicos et nosmet ipsos diligamus: sobald als wir erwacht sind, simul ut experrecti sumus: sie gehen ebenso hinweg, als sie gekommen sind, iidem abeunt, qui venerunt. – Nach den korrelat. Pronom. (tantus, talis, tot) wird »als« nicht durch quam od. atque (ac), sondern durch die entsprechenden Pronom. (quantus, qualis, quot) gegeben. – so wahr als, s. wahr. – sowohl... als auch, s. sowohl.
III) als Erläuterungspartikel: 1) um eine Pers. od. Sache, von der die Rede ist, näher zu [83] bestimmen: a) wenn die Pers. od. Sache als Gleichnis zur Erläuterung des andern dient, wo im Deutschen »als wie« steht, tamquam, z. B. ich verlasse das Leben als wie eine Herberge, ex vita discedo tamquam ex hospitio. – als ob, als wenn, gleich als ob, gleich als wenn, quasi; quasi vero; veluti si; tamquam; tamquam si; u. bei völliger Gleichheit, perinde quasi; perinde tamquam; perinde ac si; aeque ac si; haud secus ac si (selten bl. ac si); non aliter quam si (alle mit folg. Konjunktiv). – nicht als wenn, nicht als ob, non quo; non quia. non quoniam (nicht weil): nicht als ob nicht, non quin (wofür Cicero auch sagt non quia non).
2) um eine Eigenschaft anzugeben. Hier wird »als« nur dann übersetzt, wenn es ein Prädikat anfügt, das als solches nur in der Vorstellung des im Satze als tätig zu betrachtenden Subjekts besteht, und zwar wird dann »als« ausgedrückt durch: tamquam (das den Grad ausdrückt, so sehr als, als wenn); ut (die Beziehung, insofern); pro (gemäß); loco (an jemandes Stelle, wie); instar (so gut als, in gleichem Werte mit); nomine (unter dem Namen); z. B. ich liebe dich als Freund, amo te ut amicum (insofern du mein Fr. bist), tamquam amicum (so sehr, als wenndu mein Fr. wärest): als Gewinn etwas wegnehmen, lucri nomine tollere alqd: Plato gilt für mich soviel als alle, Plato est mihi instar omnium. – Ost läßt sich dieses »als« mit dem beigefügten Substantiv durch ein Adverbium ausdrücken, z. B. als ein Weib, muliebriter: als ein Sklave, serviliter; servilem in modum. – Enthält aber die Eigenschaft zugleich den Grund, die Bedingung oder Bestätigung des Vorhergehenden, so heißt als, als welcher, quippe, quippe qui, utpote qui (mit folg. Konjunktiv); z. B. die Sonne scheint dem Demokrit, als einem gelehrten Manne, groß, sol Democrito magnus videtur, quippe viro erudito. – Dient aber die Partikel »als« zur Anreihung eines faktischen Prädikats, so wird sie im Latein. gar nicht übersetzt, wie bei den Verben als etwas gelten, schätzen, halten, und deren Passiv sich als etwas zeigen, bewähren, als etwas erscheinen, ferner erwählt werden als etc., z. B. Aristides gilt als der gerechteste Mann, Aristides iustissimus vir habetur: Servius Tullius wurde vom römischen Volke als König gewählt, Servius Tullius a populo Romano rex creatus est.
